The "Media Diet": Why You Must Stop Scrolling to Create Better Content
Published July 27, 2026 by David
I don’t scroll to "stay informed." I scroll to find ideas. Except 90% of the time, I land on posts that look identical: same structure, same clichés, same overused jargon.
Result? My brain hits saturation. I end up regurgitating clones of what everyone’s already seen. And that’s the fastest way to go unnoticed.
Yes, the solution is to turn off the tap. Not for a digital detox, but because it’s the only way to truly create content that leaves a mark.
1. Break Your Algorithmic Bubble
If you only consume what LinkedIn or Instagram feeds you, your brain will eventually sound like everyone else. And that’s the death of originality.
To avoid this, I’ve enforced a strict media diet:
- Deep-dive books: 30 minutes a day, max. Psychology, sociology, history—solid concepts I can repurpose in my posts.
- Client frontlines: My best insights come from conversations with prospects. Their words, their objections, their raw expectations. That’s the raw material for my content.
- My own experience: By jotting down my thoughts in a healthy pro/personal boundary in storytelling, I craft unique content. Impossible to copy.
2. 80% Creation, 20% Targeted Research
Top creators don’t scroll to "see what’s happening." They scroll with a precise intent.
I follow the 80/20 rule:
- 80% of the time: I create. I structure my arguments, design my visuals, and engage with my ideal clients.
- 20% of the time: I conduct ultra-targeted research. For example, 30 minutes on Friday to analyze 3 high-performing accounts. I note their structures, angles, then close the app.
3. Let Your Brain Do the Work
Our brains aren’t built to ingest thousands of posts daily. It’s when we disconnect that they shift into "problem-solving mode."
A walk without headphones, a workout, a blank page with a pen—this is where innovative ideas emerge. I dump everything into Content Splintering. Then I let it marinate. When I have 4-5 solid ideas, I turn them into high-impact carousels.
